Among the most important entertainments in Siena we can here remember the Corsa del Palio, ruling on every year at the Piazza del Campo on 2nd July and on 16th August. The “Corsa del Palio” (the Horses Race of Palio) represents the most important event in the city during the whole year. The “Palio” has its origin in the far past, a sort of tournement with the horses representing the 17 quarters which is now divided the city in. Each quarter, each “Contrada” is a small state chiefed by a “Priore” and during the race by a “Chaptain”: it has its own colours, heraldic symbols, costumes, oratory, coats of arms, official representatives, a church and a Patron Saint, an accounting balance. All the inhabitants participate to the feast: everyone, proud and bold of the quarter where he lives, prepares himself all over the year: for example at the organization of banquets to finance the Palio and more else.

In the preceeding days there are the assignements of the horses to the quarters, the tests for the competition, the animals’ Blessing in the Cathedral. The day of the event there is first a sumptuous parade in medieval costumes with the different colours and heraldic symbols of the quarters, accompanied by flag bearers with the rhythmic rolling of drums, so typical of Siena. After an year of waiting, in a sort of long liturgical procedure, the race happens all in a sudden, all around the Piazza del Campo, a sort of medieval Roman amphitheatre, where horses and jockeys wildly fight one another during 3 turns of the square, after alliances and rivalries. The winner receives the “Palio”, a sort of silk banner hand painted by a well known artist. The feasting goes on for days, with songs and dances in the streets of the city, with the “Victory dinner” where of course there participates the very victorious horse together with its jockey.

Since 1968 on the first Sundays of every month and on the preceding Saturdays there has been taking place the Antique Dealers’ Fair in the very centre of the medieval town, from Piazza Grande (Large Square) to the ancient streets of the sorrounding area: antique trade, collecting, jewelry, art crafts in more than 10.000 square meter surface. Established in 1968 by the antique dealer Ivan Bruschi, it has been the first antique Exhibition to take place in a regular cadence (it has never missed its monthly appointments) and a lasting success in an exclusive scenery: the medieval centre of Arezzo. Nowadays the exhibitors coming from all over Italy are more than 500; they offer with their objects a broad general view of cultural traditions and regional costumes, an endless source for small and great collectors.

Thanks to the success of this open air exhibition, the very shops of antique dealers in the town are increased and now are more than an hundred: a great increasement if we think in 1968 the antique dealers were at maximum fifteen. Just as in the Antique Fair you can find here pieces of furniture, paintings and objects, very different one another not only for period but also for quality. They are mixed all together, so that the visitor can enjoy the taste of discovering. There are available also shops of collectors and researchers, selling selected pieces, for example shops specialized in Nineteenth or Twentieth century paintings, ancient books, scientific equipment, classic archeology, Art Nouveau stained-glass windows or doors, engravings, art-decò objects, vintage, silversmiths, modern antique collectings, watches and clocks, jewels.

In the same period of the Antique Fair there take place many collateral events: antique shows, exhibitions and expositions taking many other qualified exhibitors to propose their pieces in prestigious galleries. Summarizing, at Arezzo Antiques Fair the offering is very diversified so that it can satisfy the most demanding collectors and art conoisseurs.
The timetable of the Antique Fair is as follows:
8,00 a.m. – 20,00 p.m.
